Frequently Asked Questions

Q

If I’m interested in Vista, what do I do?

A

Request an information packet through our online inquiry form, or call Vista at 860-399-8080 . An information packet will be sent to you and a meeting can be arranged to introduce you to Vista and give you a tour of our campus.

Q

Does Vista admit new students only in the fall?

A

Vista has rolling admissions, which means we can accept new students throughout the year, whenever an opening is available. You may apply at any time.

Q

Does my son/daughter have to have graduated from high school in order to attend?

A

Students coming to Vista may have a high school diploma, but it is not a prerequisite. Sometimes students come to Vitsta after having "aged out" or completed high school. Quite often Vista is contracted by school systems to provide required transition programming.

Vista does not provide high school academics within its array of services but can work with outside resources to provide academic training.

Q

When are admissions tours scheduled?

A

Admissions tours are scheduled at our Westbrook campus in the morning or afternoon, Monday through Friday. To schedule a tour, please contact Bobbi Guercia, Director of Admissions, at 203 318-5240 or email her at bguercia@vistavocational.org.

Q

Does the potential student attend the initial tour?

A

The potential student is welcome to come to the initial tour, however is not required. If a potential student does attend the tour, they can take an individual tour with Vista staff and a student ambassador while the family participates in the informational meeting.

Q

What should I bring to the Admissions tour?

A

Bring any questions you may have about the program and plan to spend approximately 2 hours meeting with the Director of Admissions and touring the Westbrook campus. No written material is required for this initial tour.

Q

How does Vista evaluate prospective students during the five day evaluation visit?

A

The evaluation process occurs at Vista’s Residence, and the visiting applicant shares a room with a current Vista student. The visiting applicant participates in Vista programming and individual, hands-on, functional skills assessments performed by Vista staff in the areas of employment, life skills, cognitive, social, and emotional development, and community integration.

Q

When do we complete an application packet?

A

After your admissions meeting and tour, you will complete a one page initial application form indicating an interest in applying to Vista and send it with the required deposit. Upon receipt, an evaluation date will be scheduled. You will then receive a comprehensive application packet that will include student and parent applications; personal skills questionnaires; a request for high school or current program records; results of psychological tests administered within the past 5 years; along with other relevant information of a vocational, psycho-social and educational nature.

Q

When is the comprehensive application packet due?

A

The completed packet is due to Vista 2 weeks prior to the scheduled evaluation date.

Q

During the evaluation, can I visit or call my child?

A

Part of the evaluation is determining the potential student’s ability to live away from home and cope with separation from their family. While visits from family and friends would disrupt the evaluation process, a call home is traditionally scheduled.

Q

When will I hear from Vista after the 5-day evaluation?

A

The Admissions department will call you within one week following the completion of the five day evaluation to indicate whether your son or daughter has been accepted into Vista. The comprehensive vocational and life skills evaluation report will be sent to you within 6 weeks after the completion of the evaluation.

Q

Does Vista only accept admissions into the Entrance Program?

A

No. Traditionally the Residential phase of the Entrance program is where most students begin at Vista; however applicants can be accepted into any phase or program based on their abilities and individual circumstances.
